scholars have long seen the humanists' disdain for scholasticism as a distinguishing feature of italian renaissance thought and culture.
paul kristeller has shown that in attacking scholasticism the humanists were not opposing a discipline long entrenched in italian universities, but rather a discipline that flourished simultaneously with humanism.
my study of fra antonio da rho, o.f.m.
(ca.
1395-ca.
1447) and his three dialogues against lactantius demonstrates that scholasticism and humanism were often not as radically opposed to each other as the humanists at times have led us to believe.
although some humanists were hostile to scholasticism, i argue that the relative value of the studia humanitatis and scholasticism remained an unsettled question among the humanists themselves.
this study examines the ideas, events, and controversies that shaped rho's thought and values.
it also surveys the fortuna of the latin father, lactantius (ca.
ad 240-ca.
325), who came to be revered by the humanists as the "christian cicero." i contend that his popularity increased rapidly during the renaissance because individuals living in an urban, increasingly secular culture were drawn to his identification of true worship with the vita activa instead of the vita contemplativa.
similarly, they found his exposition of christian teaching attractive because he presented it as part of the history of religions and not as metaphysical abstractions.
this study highlights rho's enumeration, analysis, and refutation of some of lactantius's errors in natural philosophy, moral philosophy, metaphysics, and theology.
rho maintained that lactantius fell into error in each of these areas because he rejected philosophy and recklessly pursued rhetoric.
i, in addition, argue that rho aimed this criticism both generally at many of his humanist contemporaries – whom rho openly addresses – and specifically at his more famous associate, lorenza vala – whom he cryptically censures.
in opposition to valla, who used the fathers as evidence that philosophy had no place in true theology, rho asserts that the fathers had appropriated every human science, especially philosophy, in the service of theology and the exposition of sacred scripture.
for rho the fathers provided the example not only for a rhetorical, humanistic theology, but also the inspiration for a philosophical, scholastic theology
